Stockholm Royal Seaport is designed and built to be an accessible and densely populated part of central Stockholm. The urban district house a selection of mixed functions to decrease travel demands, while at the same time, provide amble of opportunities for sustainable travel to and from the area.
The area is designed after a traffic hierarchy that gives priority to walking and biking, followed by public transport and private cars. This results in great accessibility for its resident and a city that is built to prioritise convenience for those who walk, bike, and use public transport.
The below table 2.1 shows number of bicycle parking and car parking lots per development phase. The results for Norra 1 and Västra are presented at the end of the table, since these where the first areas to be developed and only had voluntary requirements.

The city provides bicycle-, carpool parking, electric charging points (including fast charging station) in several places in public space to complement those provided for the residents within development sites. The number and location of these services can be seen in table 2.2 below.

Proximity to private and public services plays a major role in creating sustainable travel patterns. The interactive maps below shows how long time it takes to reach different kinds of everyday services such as grocery stores, preschools, and metro stations.
Every circle in map 2.1 corresponds to a 5 minutes’ walk, about 450 meters.
Stockholm city planning requirements specify that there should be more parking places for bikes than for cars. In Norra 2, the requirement per development site is to provide 2.2 parking lots for bicycles and 0.5 parking lots for cars. From Brofästet and onwards the requirements for bicycle parking has increased to 2.5 parking lots apartment. There are also qualitative requirements promoting the use of bikes.
Summary of requirements:

All developers in the development phases with mandatory requirements, i.e. Norra 2 and Brofästet, comply with requirements for bicycle and car parking lots. The two first development phases (Norra 1 and Västra) had voluntary targets.
Several developers have provided both indoor and outdoor bike parking. 15% of car parking lots have been provided with electric charging infrastructure.
During the course of the project the city realised that quantitative demands on bicycle parking needed to be supplemented with qualitative requirements.
From Brofästet and onwards, the requirement for bike parking lots has been increased and supplemented with qualitative demands.
All property developers comply with the accessibility requirements, together with an even distribution between indoor and outdoor spaces. 24% of the car parking lots are provided with electric charging points.
In Gasverket Västra there’s a mix of both historic and new buildings. The historic buildings do not have any development site space for bicycle parking and limited opportunity to provide car parking, this resulted in bicycle parking to be placed on public space and car parking is limited to a few disability parking lots.
The developer, Oscar Properties, is planning to build 318 apartments, has met the requirement of 2.5 bicycle parking lots per apartment via a “bike corridor,” with space for 700 bikes, between the main building and the garage.
From Södra Värtan and onwards, the developed ‘Mobility index’ has been implemented. Mobility Index is a tool developed in the Stockholm Royal Seaport to promote sustainable mobility solutions.
This area is still in early planning phase and the results will be presented later this year. The Mobility Index was inspired by the Green Space Index and provide the property developer with a better opportunity of assessing solutions for the property.
The requirements for these two development phases are based on voluntary agreements, the results are according to the property developer’s own accounting and have not been reviewed by the City of Stockholm.
Planning facilitates walking, cycling and travel by public transport.
